Hey there, Tarun from Milkshake 🥤

Fun fact: Email Marketing is the oldest form of digital marketing, having been around for over 50 years!

Today, we turn back the clock for a history lesson…

A topic I find fascinating is the history of email marketing and how it’s evolved into the powerhouse it is today.

But it didn’t always start like that…

Let’s rewind ⏪

1971: The First Ever Email.tin

Email marketing has its roots in the early days of the internet, when the first email was sent in 1971 by computer engineer Ray Tomlinson.

This invention paved the way for a new form of communication and eventually led to the birth of email marketing.

Ray Tomlinson

Tomlinson was the one who came up with using the familiar "@" symbol to separate the recipient's name from where they were located.

This symbol indicated that the user was "at" some other place, not on their local network.

Even though email formats have changed a lot over the past 50+ years, we still use the "user@host" format for email addresses today.

1990s: The Rise Of Email

By the late 1990s and early 2000s, businesses had started to realize the potential of using email to reach customers and promote products and services.

Early email marketing campaigns were simple, often consisting of a plain text message with a few images and links.

2000s: The Evolution Of Email

The rise of the internet and the widespread adoption of HTML and CSS allowed for the creation of more visually appealing and engaging emails.

By the mid-2000s, sophisticated email marketing software had become available.

Yes, that's MailChimp in 2001. Crazy.

Today: Email Dominance

Today, email marketing remains one of the most effective forms of digital marketing, with companies of all sizes using it to reach and engage with their target audiences.

Marketers use a wide range of tactics and strategies, including segmentation, automation, and personalization, to create more effective and impactful email campaigns.

Despite its long history and evolution, email marketing continues to change and adapt to new technologies and changing consumer behaviors.

The future of email marketing will likely see even more sophisticated techniques and technologies, allowing marketers to reach and engage their audiences in new and innovative ways.
